How to Recognize the Early Signs of Autism

http://www.recoveryfromautism.com/index.php/viewvideo/98/early-intervention/how-to-recognize-the-early-signs-of-autism.html

Early intervention is important for children with autism, a developmental disorder that inhibits socialization. So be on the lookout for warning signs. To complete this How-To you will need: Knowledge of developmental milestones Careful attention to your baby's behavior A hearing test for your child Warning: Do not assume that if your baby exhibits behaviors associated with autism, they necessarily have the disorder. Observe them carefully and bring any concerns to a doctor. Step 1: Pay attention to babbling Pay attention to when your baby begins to babble. They should start at around five months old. Step 2: Monitor eye contact Begin monitoring eye contact at around six to nine months, when infants generally start smiling in response to their parents' grins. Babies with autism tend to avoid looking at their parents. Step 3: Try some games If your baby makes a sound, make one back and see if they reciprocate. Babies with autism usually do not take part in this verbal turn taking, nor do they participate in peek-a-boo. Step 4: Try to get their attention Note whether your baby responds to their name: They should begin to do so starting around 10 months. Babies with autism often ignore people trying to get their attention and don't solicit anyone else's attention. Tip: If your baby ignores you when you call their name, get their ears checked. They might have a hearing impairment. Step 5: Check for 12-month milestones Note their behavior at around 12 months. By this point, most babies are pointing, waving, grasping objects, and attempting to speak. Step 6: Gauge their sensitivity Gauge your baby's sensitivity to sound and touch. Many children with autism are unusually sensitive to loud noises and hate being cuddled or touched—yet they sometimes under-react to pain. Step 7: Study their focus Note their focus: Do they tend to fixate on a favorite object, or part of an object, to the exclusion of other people, including other toddlers? Step 8: Notice repetition Look for repetitive movements associated with autism, such as rocking back and forth, hand flapping, and twirling. Step 9: Notice rigidity See how set in their ways they are. Children with autism often exhibit strong resistance to changes in their routine. Step 10: Count their words Keep track of their vocabulary. At 18 months, most babies can say about a dozen words, and by the two-year mark, they are usually initiating two-word phrases. Step 11: Don't ignore regression Some children with autism seem to develop normally until 18 to 24 months, then stop or regress in speech and other growth. Consult your pediatrician if your child regresses or if they exhibit any of the behaviors previously discussed. Thanks for watching How To Recognize the Early Signs Of Autism!
http://www.recoveryfromautism.com/index.php/viewvideo/94/autism-recovery/autism-full-recovery-with-the-son-rise-program.html

http://www.AutismTreatment.org/autism-recovery An inspiring before and after video documenting the recovery of a boy with Autism using The Son-Rise Program® treatment, a cutting-edge approach for Autism treatment which flies in the face of the conventional ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) approach. The video features Simon, just one of the many children who made a full recovery from Autism using The Son-Rise Program. Simon tells his story from his Autism diagnosis to his hopes today as a gregarious 19 year-old college freshmen.

The Son-Rise Program has helped treat roughly 25,000 children and adults on the Autism spectrum worldwide in 78 countries. The Son-Rise Program was developed by parents Barry Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman 35 years ago in response to the diagnosis of severe autism given to their son, Raun. Rather than follow the advice to institutionalize Raun, the Kaufmans developed and implemented a radically different treatment that embraced their childs repetitive behaviors (isms) like plate spinning and hand flapping. Rather than judging and suppressing Rauns behavior as ABA typically does, the Kaufmans joined and celebrated Rauns isms, thereby creating a connection that allowed him to emerge from his isolation. Raun Kaufman fully recovered from Autism, attended an Ivy League university, and today, is the Director of Global Education at the Autism Treatment Center of America, with speaking engagements on Autism worldwide. Barry Neil Kaufman is the author of Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues, made into the award-winning NBC-TV movie Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love.

Im thrilled to be able to share this video with the autism community. Like many of the children who have benefitted from our program and like my son Raun, Simon is an excellent example of a Son-Rise child exceeding any expectation that his doctors had for him and eventually even being off the autism spectrum, said Barry Neil Kaufman. Simons story is a testament to never giving up hope, never setting limits on any childs future just because they are diagnosed with Autism. As Simons video story shows, this belief enabled Simon and his parents to choose an alternative to institutionalization that enabled him to leave his Autism behind to become a communicative, social young man. The sky is the limit for him.

Simons mother attributes her sons recovery from Autism to The Son-Rise Program. Simon was diagnosed by doctors who told me he had a less than 30 I.Q., would NEVER speak or recognize me again, and he would be severely autistic. Today, Simon is an authentic, loving, introspective person...truly a young Son-Rise Program child growing into his future. Years ago, I was told by a Son-Rise teacher that by growing up with the principles of this program, it would continue to be our guide to living. He had found that many of the children he had known worked with would grow up to lead extraordinary lives. We believed in that possibility for Simon, and he has already fulfilled that vision. My husband and I hope that by sharing this very personal video with the world during Autism Awareness Month, that other families will hear Simon's words and find their way to The Son-Rise Program as well.

The Son-Rise Program and the Kaufmans have been featured in over 2,000 articles and programs appearing in major media worldwide, including: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Self Magazine, Parenting Magazine, The Daily Telegraph, A.M. Chicago With Oprah Winfrey, The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) and Good Morning America. The Kaufman's work has been endorsed by Jimmy Carter, Dr. Carl Rogers, Deepak Chopra, Bernie Siegel, Norman Cousins, Lou Holtz, John Bradshaw, Bill Cosby, Dr. Wayne Dyer and many others. Barry Neil Kaufman is the author of Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues, made into the award-winning NBC-TV movie Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love. In total, the Kaufmans are the authors of 12 books. Through the Autism Treatment Center of America, thousands of parents and professionals from around the world have been trained and helped by this extraordinary method to reach children with Autism previously considered "unreachable".

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, the PGA recently collaborated with Autism Speaks on a public service announcement (PSA) that debuted on the Golf Channel and CBS during the 2008 Verizon Heritage on Hilton Head Island, SC. The PSA features a heartfelt autism awareness message from Liezl Els, wife of pro-golfer Ernie Els. The Els' 5-year-old son Ben has been diagnosed with autism. Ernie Els first announced his partnership with Autism Speaks and his mission to raise awareness about autism during the PODS Championship in Tampa Bay, FL in March.

Ernie Els and fellow pro-golfer Cliff Kresge, who also has a child with autism, wrote a personal message that was placed in every player's locker at the Verizon Heritage tournament, encouraging them to wear the Autism Speaks puzzle piece pins to show their support. Els will continue to raise awareness throughout the season by sporting the Autism Speaks logo on his golf bag.

But for some children with autism, oral health habits can be challenging. Autism Speaks has teamed up with Colgate and Philips-Sonicare to create a dental guide, as well as a video, to provide tips for families so they can help their loved ones with autism find dental care that works best for them. Our hope is that this guide will provide information for families to help begin a lifetime of good oral care.
