what is autism?? Other known study's that are linked to many cases of autism

what is autism??
Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not
Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

How common is Autism?
Today, it is estimated that one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism. Government statistics suggest the prevalence rate of autism is increasing 10-17 percent annually. There is not established explanation for this increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered. Studies suggest boys are more likely than girls to develop autism and receive the diagnosis three to four times more frequently. Current estimates are that in the United States alone, one out of 70 boys is diagnosed with autism.

What causes Autism?
The simple answer is we don't know. The vast majority of cases of autism are idiopathic, which means the cause is unknown.

The more complex answer is that just as there are different levels of severity and combinations of symptoms in autism, there are probably multiple causes. The best scientific evidence available to us today points toward a potential for various combinations of factors causing autism – multiple genetic components that may cause autism on their own or possibly when combined with exposure to as yet undetermined environmental factors. Timing of exposure during the child's development (before, during or after birth) may also play a role in the development or final presentation of the disorder.

A small number of cases can be linked to genetic disorders such as Fragile X, Tuberous Sclerosis, and Angelman's Syndrome, as well as exposure to environmental agents such as infectious ones (maternal rubella or cytomegalovirus) or chemical ones (thalidomide or valproate) during pregnancy. many theory's behind all the above ..that have not been proven .

There is a growing interest among researchers about the role of the functions and regulation of the immune system in autism – both within the body and the brain. Piecemeal evidence over the past 30 years suggests that autism may involve inflammation in the central nervous system. There is also emerging evidence from animal studies that illustrates how the immune system can influence behaviors related to autism. Autism Speaks is working to extend awareness and investigation of potential immunological issues to researchers outside the field of autism as well as those within the autism research community.

While the definitive cause (or causes) of autism is not yet clear, it is clear that it is not caused by bad parenting. Dr. Leo Kanner, the psychiatrist who first described autism as a unique condition in 1943, believed that it was caused by cold, unloving mothers. Bruno Bettelheim, a renowned professor of child development perpetuated this misinterpretation of autism. Their promotion of the idea that unloving mothers caused their children's autism created a generation of parents who carried the tremendous burden of guilt for their children's disability.

In the 1960s and 70s, Dr. Bernard Rimland, the father of a son with autism, who later founded the Autism Society of America and the Autism Research Institute, helped the medical community understand that autism is not caused by cold parents but rather is a biological disorder.

Link Between Junk Food & Autism Is Sad But Not Surprising. Does the link between processed food and autism surprise you?

Posted by Adriana Velez When we heard about the link between maternal obesity and autism, we thought it made sense, sad as that discovery is. After all, obesity during pregnancy is linked to other risk factors for infants. So it's not surprising that our typical diet of highly processed food is also linked with autism. The problem here isn't so much with what processed food puts into our bodies -- it's what it keeps our bodies from eliminating. High frutcose corn syrup can cause mineral deficiencies, which in turn can prevent our bodies for getting rid of toxic chemicals in our systems. Processed food leading to autism is a very complex chain of events, as researcher David Wallinga explains. "If you've got enough calcium in your diet, it's going to protect you from absorbing lead, and concurrently, if you are calcium-deficient, then you're going to absorb more lead in your gut, and therefore have more lead in your bloodstream." Toxins in the environment also play a role here. The researchers recommend a diet high in antioxidants and necessary minerals for pregnant women. More from The Stir: 10 Steps to… Read More

Kids With Autism Need to Date Too! What's the most pervasive myth about autism you've encountered?

Posted by Jeanne Sager Of all the myths about autism -- and whoo boy are there a lot -- one of the most prevalent marks kids on the spectrum as unfeeling, lacking the ability to love and desire to feel a human connection. Guess what y'all? Teenagers with autism are the same mess of hormones and lust as their peers. They want to date too. And thanks to two particular college kids with Asperger's who volunteered to work with The New York Times and their Love on the Spectrum project late last year, these loving, feeling kids finally have a voice in the national discussion of autism to break down another barrier to getting a date: society frowning on them. Jack Robison and Kirsten Lindsmith have sparked the kind of outpouring of emotion that the myth makers wouldn't expect from kids on the spectrum.  But emotional these kids have been. They want the world to know they don't love other people "despite" their autism. They just plain love other people. It's an important -- albeit difficult to grasp -- distinction. But kids with autism are trying to show the world that the syndrome may… Read More

My daughter is being diagnosed for autism and I need help dealing with this. - autism daughter diagnosis

Pardon me if I vent, and this becomes lengthy, but I need to clear my head about this and see if I can get some advice from other parents or adults that have gone through this. At this point, my wife and I are dealing with a preliminary evaluation but this is just confirmation of something we have always suspected. We still need a thorough diagnosis by a developmental Psychologist but we are in the process of getting that referral now. Having said that we've had time with the staff at her school and our family doctor, and almost all of the red flags are there: spinning, hand flapping, social anxiety, meltdowns over changes to schedule, picky eating, poorly developed gross motor skills, echolalia... Having said that, she is a brilliant kid. She's 6, but was reading by age 3, and is now reading at a grade 4 level. Her writing and math skills are miles ahead of the rest of her class and her teacher tells us that she has never had to be 'taught' anything. She attaches emotionally and can understand some social cues. She's fully functional although things like riding a bike and putting on… Read More

Autism Rates

HFCS exacerbates autistic symptoms posted by vicki on 18 Apr 2012 at 2:18 pm My son is about to turn 20. When he was younger and I was trying dietary intervention, the number one ingredient that increased, echoalia, self-styming, hyperactivity (really bad),tantrums, you name it, was HFCS. Like may parents I spent a lot of time researching. I pointed out to his pediatrician that his finger nails showed classic signs of zinc deficiency. She brushed me off, along with family members, and school personnel. Twenty years ago, there wasn't the research, knowledge or support that there is today. I am so happy that at how far things have come, how much more of a voice that parents have, and the possibility that one day, no child or their family, will have to deal with the adverse effects of ASD. previous page | post followup | alert a moderator | Read More

Vaccine autism evidence overwhelming (autism)

http://www.whale.to/vaccine/mmr58.html The evidence is now overwhelming, despite the misinformation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Institute of Medicine. The (Pretending to) Combat Autism Act By Bernard Rimland I am no longer "trying to dig up evidence to prove" vaccines cause autism. There is already abundant evidence,...... This debate is not scientific but is political. --- [July 9, 2006 Blog/letter] Discovering the causes, treatment of autism ----David Ayoub, MD "In my view, this is not a scientific issue. This is about as proven an issue as you're ever going to see, and what's occurring here is a cover up under the guise of protecting the vaccine program. And I'm for the vaccine program. You keep covering it up and your not going to have a vaccine program," Geier "For the past few years much of my lab's work has focused on autism, including an evaluation of the possible contribution of thimerosal, the ethylmercury-containing vaccine preservative. .....Let me state unequivocally that there is strong scientific evidence linking thimerosal to autism." New Study Results on Autism! Toddler brain difference linked to autism - CNN.com

The brainicap issue. -.- Hello ma'am. I am 23 but I was diagnosed with Autism and Asperger's when I was 21. As sort of a support group thingy, he said I grew up with it (the lack of social interaction, not talking, always playing by myself). I think it is a neurological disorder. Something wrong about the brain. The trouble with being special needs is the lack of independence (which one wants but one finds hard to get), it always seems like we have to rely on others around us to help us with things like cooking, cleaning, vacuuming, doing the chores, picking up after ourselves, completing the schoolwork, and possibly getting a job which may be more challenging if we were not blessed with a brain (like me) or we possess some kind of a learning disorder (again, like me). This may be called being handicapped or disabled. I would be the last person to know of course (the lack of brains you know). Well it is frustration if you don't want to be dependent (like me) and you want to have independence (like me) but your brain doesn't work with you to complete the task so desired. I… Read More

April Is World Autism Awareness Month.:

azureline19 wrote:Contact the incoming Minister and share your concerns? 12 is better than none....and the State schools get lots of funding as opposed to Private.......so. choices.... choices......   IMO - 12 sessions spread over 3 years is a waste of money - and time - and gives caregivers a false sense of security - as "hey - we're doing what the experts say - so I must be doing the best possible for the child". The efforts would be better directed elsewhere - or as Buzz suggests, to those with the most severe needs.   I don't need to contact the minister, this will affect me in no way - maybe the Public System has changed, but from my experiences, what they provide and what their experts recommend, falls far short of what is really needed to make a difference.   As for the Private/public debate - what you ay is true, but doesn't change the fact that the situation and allocation of funds is unjust - private school peeps still pay for a spot in the publkic system, they just choose to go somewhere else when the public system can't/won't provide the level of care/service that is really required.… Read More

"World Autism Awareness Day -- Recognize Someone": Autism Support Community

My wonderful friend J has Asperger's syndrome. He knows what it's like to be subject to prejudice and unfairness, and he's made it his life's mission to never do that to anyone around him. Plus he's a helluva mechanic and one of a very few people on the planet I'll trust with my car.My other friend J (different name, same initial) probably has Asperger's syndrome, and his sister A definitely does. They're both musical geniuses; they both sing, and J is a classically trained pianist. My little basically-niece, age 4, has developmental delays that may or may not put her on the spectrum. One of the things I'm proudest of in my life is that she has chosen me as one of the people she trusts enough to come to with her feelings. My best friend from high school's five-year-old son has PDD-NOS. The unique thing about him is his rapier wit. The kid is hilarious, just like his parents who are both kooks in the best possible way. Many of the clients I have worked with are on the spectrum, and to protect their confidentiality, all I can say about them is that they are awesome. And although he's passed many years ago,… Read More

"Light it Up Blue for Autism, World Autism Day (picture) Add your pictures too!"

The Shy One and Nikomoon, I understand where you are, I was there too. You will go through the stages of grief because the child you thought you had is now gone and a new one is now in his place. That is expected and healthy for you to go through the stages. But I will tell you this. Noah has been a wonderful addition to our family and we would not be the same if we never had him or if he was a typical kid. We get more joy out of him than we get out of anything else in any weeks time. His pure, childlike joy and happiness about life is so refreshing and a wonderful thing for our family. His older brother, who is 18 and a senior, is so patient and accepting with his brother and I think it has truly made him into a better person than he would have been if he didn't have Noah as his little brother. I know it is hard to see right now but one day you will realize that you no longer are sad about him, you are happy over every little milestone. You will realize… Read More

Autism?

Gemma - Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I love the positive spin on it! I definitely agree that people can learn so much from people with Asperger's. I think our fresh perspective on life keeps things interesting! Banshee-Screamer - That sounds really tough!! Social situations are definitely hard for me, too. I've noticed that I have a lot of trouble telling when someone is joking or not, which usually ends with me going, "Really?" and the other person laughing at me and saying, "Of course not!" It's incredibly frustrating and just makes me feel really socially awkward! I also have trouble understanding body language. I have no idea what it means when someone is gesturing to me across the room at, say, school, and usually they have to explain what they wanted from me later. Lugez - Thank you for sharing your experience as well!! Congratulations on finishing college! I can totally relate to dreading getting a job. Usually, interviews aren't too bad for me, but sometimes carrying out the actual job itself is tough, depending on how much I'm interacting with people. I also have trouble processing instructions sometimes. Eye contact is really… Read More

The Alarmingly High Price of Raising Kids With Autism! Are you surprised?

The Alarmingly High Price of Raising Kids With Autism Posted by Julie Ryan Evans When families make a decision to have children or not, finances often weigh heavy in their decision. They consider things like if one parent can afford to stay home or not, how many years of daycare they may need, and plenty of other financial factors. What many fail to add into the equation, however, is what if that child has autism. According to recent study, families of children with autism are hit not only emotionally when their child is diagnosed, but they take significant financial blows as well. A new report says families with autistic children earn $18,000 less than those whose children don't. That's a lot of money, and it's primarily due to the mother not being able to work as much or at all.  The study showed those with autistic children were 6 percent less likely to be employed, worked seven hours less per week, and they had less than half the annual income than those whose children had no disability. David Mandell, associate director of the Center for Autism Research at The Children's… Read More

WoW Autism Fundrasier

I too have High functioning Autism, along with Asperger's syndrome, and dysgraphia. I understand where your coming from. I'm 20 years old and had to go through being bullied in elementry school, middle school and high school. I would say being social is definitly difficult for me and I was pushed around and made fun of it because I was put in a Special Ed class which has a ignorant stereotype that all people attending those classes are mentally retarded. I felt the class was a waste of my time, teachers treated me like i was low functioning, ignoring me in classes when i had a question, or spending too much time with me. The special ed class also put me behind my peers because i had to sacrifice a class to take it and it wasn't my choice. since i was socially deficient, suicide was never far from my thoughts. when i went to high school I took Drama, and i would say that doing that saved my life. by doing theatre i was forced to work in a group, talk to people, and act in front of hundreds of people. This helped remove my shyness, and made… Read More

Excess dietary iron / lipid peroxidation / autism (autism stress allergies allergic)

Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2005 Aug 2; [Epub ahead of print] Related Articles, Links Increased excretion of a lipid peroxidation biomarker in autism. Ming X, Stein TP, Brimacombe M, Johnson WG, Lambert GH, Wagner GC. Department of Neurosciences, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, 90 Bergen Street, Suite 8100, Newark, NJ 07103, USA; Department of Pediatrics, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Center for Childhood Neurotoxicology and Exposure Assessment, New Brunswick, NJ, USA. It is thought that autism could result from an interaction between genetic and environmental factors with oxidative stress as a potential mechanism linking the two. One genetic factor may be altered oxidative-reductive capacity. This study tested the hypothesis that children with autism have increased oxidative stress. We evaluated children with autism for the presence of two oxidative stress biomarkers. Urinary excretion of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and 8-isoprostane-F2alpha (8-iso-PGF2alpha) were determined in 33 children with autism and 29 healthy controls. 8-iso-PGF2alpha levels were significantly higher in children with autism. The isoprostane levels in autistic subjects were variable with a bimodal distribution. The majority of autistic subjects showed a moderate increase in isoprostane levels while a smaller group of autistic children showed dramatic increases in their isoprostane levels. There was a trend… Read More

MMR and autism? Should I let my year old child get the vaccination? Opinions?

The link between MMR and autism has been wildly discredited. The only REAL like is that most kids have their MMR at 18 months or so, and that is a similar time to when the symptoms of Autism really become noticeable. Autism is genetic, it isn't caused by an injection. Not having the MMR puts your son at risk of Measles, Mumps and Rubella - all of which is horrible enough, but there are other consequences. I have a friend who decided not to get her twin daughters vaccinated against the MMR. Fine - her choice I accept that. However, it is her twin daughters 3rd birthday this weekend and NOBODY is going to it. (everyone is dropping round the presents early, and then making excuses such as 'dentist' or 'seeing grandma'. And people aren't coming because - the MMR isn't 100% effective until you have your preschool booster at 5. No parent whose kids have had the first MMR injection, wants to risk their children getting Measles, Mumps or Rubella from a child who has NO protection against it. Basically my friend has turned her two daughters into 'untouchables' - they never get invited round on playdates, or birthday… Read More
