Posted by Adriana Velez When we heard about the link between maternal obesity and autism, we thought it made sense, sad as that discovery is. After all, obesity during pregnancy is linked to other risk factors for infants. So it's not surprising that our typical diet of highly processed food is also linked with autism. The problem here isn't so much with what processed food puts into our bodies -- it's what it keeps our bodies from eliminating. High frutcose corn syrup can cause mineral deficiencies, which in turn can prevent our bodies for getting rid of toxic chemicals in our systems. Processed food leading to autism is a very complex chain of events, as researcher David Wallinga explains. "If you've got enough calcium in your diet, it's going to protect you from absorbing lead, and concurrently, if you are calcium-deficient, then you're going to absorb more lead in your gut, and therefore have more lead in your bloodstream." Pardon me if I vent, and this becomes lengthy, but I need to clear my head about this and see if I can get some advice from other parents or adults that have gone through this. At this point, my wife and I are dealing with a preliminary evaluation but this is just confirmation of something we have always suspected. We still need a thorough diagnosis by a developmental Psychologist but we are in the process of getting that referral now. Having said that we've had time with the staff at her school and our family doctor, and almost all of the red flags are there: spinning, hand flapping, social anxiety, meltdowns over changes to schedule, picky eating, poorly developed gross motor skills, echolalia... Having said that, she is a brilliant kid. She's 6, but was reading by age 3, and is now reading at a grade 4 level. Her writing and math skills are miles ahead of the rest of her class and her teacher tells us that she has never had to be 'taught' anything. When he was younger and I was trying dietary intervention, the number one ingredient that increased, echoalia, self-styming, hyperactivity (really bad),tantrums, you name it, was HFCS. Like may parents I spent a lot of time researching. I pointed out to his pediatrician that his finger nails showed classic signs of zinc deficiency. She brushed me off, along with family members,and school personnel. Twenty years ago, there wasn't the research, knowledge or support that there is today. The brainicap issue. -.- Hello ma'am. I am 23 but I was diagnosed with Autism and Asperger's when I was 21. As sort of a support group thingy, he said I grew up with it (the lack of social interaction, not talking, always playing by myself). I think it is a neurological disorder. Something wrong about the brain. The trouble with being special needs is the lack of independence (which one wants but one finds hard to get), it always seems like we have to rely on others around us to help us with things like cooking, cleaning, vacuuming, doing the chores, picking up after ourselves, completing the schoolwork, and possibly getting a job which may be more challenging if we were not blessed with a brain (like me) or we possess some kind of a learning disorder (again, like me). This may be called being handicapped or disabled. I would be the last person to know of course (the lack of brains you know). My wonderful friend J has Asperger's syndrome. He knows what it's like to be subject to prejudice and unfairness, and he's made it his life's mission to never do that to anyone around him. Plus he's a helluva mechanic and one of a very few people on the planet I'll trust with my car.My other friend J (different name, same initial) probably has Asperger's syndrome, and his sister A definitely does. They're both musical geniuses; they both sing, and J is a classically trained pianist.My little basically-niece, age 4, has developmental delays that may or may not put her on the spectrum. One of the things I'm proudest of in my life is that she has chosen me as one of the people she trusts enough to come to with her feelings.My best friend from high school's five-year-old son has PDD-NOS. The Shy One and Nikomoon, I understand where you are, I was there too. You will go through the stages of grief because the child you thought you had is now gone and a new one is now in his place. That is expected and healthy for you to go through the stages. But I will tell you this. Noah has been a wonderful addition to our family and we would not be the same if we never had him or if he was a typical kid. We get more joy out of him than we get out of anything else in any weeks time. His pure, childlike joy and happiness about life is so refreshing and a wonderful thing for our family. His older brother, who is 18 and a senior, is so patient and accepting with his brother and I think it has truly made him into a better person than he would have been if he didn't have Noah as his little brother. I think our fresh perspective on life keeps things interesting! Banshee-Screamer - That sounds really tough!! Social situations are definitely hard for me, too. I've noticed that I have a lot of trouble telling when someone is joking or not, which usually ends with me going, "Really?" and the other person laughing at me and saying, "Of course not!" It's incredibly frustrating and just makes me feel really socially awkward! I also have trouble understanding body language. I have no idea what it means when someone is gesturing to me across the room at, say, school, and usually they have to explain what they wanted from me later. I'm 20 years old and had to go through being bullied in elementry school, middle school and high school. I would say being social is definitly difficult for me and I was pushed around and made fun of it because I was put in a Special Ed class which has a ignorant stereotype that all people attending those classes are mentally retarded. I felt the class was a waste of my time, teachers treated me like i was low functioning, ignoring me in classes when i had a question, or spending too much time with me. The special ed class also put me behind my peers because i had to sacrifice a class to take it and it wasn't my choice. since i was socially deficient, suicide was never far from my thoughts. when i went to high school I took Drama, and i would say that doing that saved my life. by doing theatre i was forced to work in a group, talk to people, and act in front of hundreds of people. The link between MMR and autism has been wildly discredited. The only REAL like is that most kids have their MMR at 18 months or so, and that is a similar time to when the symptoms of Autism really become noticeable. Autism is genetic, it isn't caused by an injection. Not having the MMR puts your son at risk of Measles, Mumps and Rubella - all of which is horrible enough, but there are other consequences. I have a friend who decided not to get her twin daughters vaccinated against the MMR. Fine - her choice I accept that. However, it is her twin daughters 3rd birthday this weekend and NOBODY is going to it. (everyone is dropping round the presents early, and then making excuses such as 'dentist' or 'seeing grandma'. And people aren't coming because - the MMR isn't 100% effective until you have your preschool booster at 5. No parent whose kids have had the first MMR injection, wants to risk their children getting Measles, Mumps or Rubella from a child who has NO protection against it. I feel for you. A girlfriend has an autistic son also. He'd be about 15 now He can't talk, just grunts or moans, can't eat so he is fed a liquid through a tube which goes direct to his stomach. It is very difficult for her. She & her DH split up a few years ago, partly because he was embarrassed & never helped out with his son. They have 2 other children as well. She has found a great support group which has been her lifeline. Can't be easy for you or anyone with a special needs child. Sorry I have no personal experience I can share with you.
