Sadly, you can't really prove that is actually true anymore than any of the rest of us can prove it's all some big conspiracy. It does, however, feel 'wrong' to me in some way, and I've personally learned to become extremely skeptical of things that give me such a vibe.

Also, saying the onus is not on the scientific community to reap the socioeconomic consequences of their own actions seems extremely irresponsible to me. I see it as the exact same thing as a scientist inventively 're-thinking' the definition of global climate change and what parts man is directly responsible for, then passing the 'social and economic consequences' onto the rest of us.

Sometimes it's not just impartial and progressive science, sometimes it's just wrong. If not scientifically, than morally. Scientists are people too, and a part of the community. We place an inordinate amount of our trust, safety, and money into their care.

.. and on a personal note, I think you underestimate the powerful influence money and politics(read: politicians/officials) plays in the 'progress' our scientific community produces.
