Autism Recovery is possible!

A fundamental component and symptom of autism is that of sensory dysfunction. A common therapeutic approach, referred to as sensory integration, is the cornerstone of many children’s autism programming and is intended to regulate a child’s sensory system. Chiropractic treatment is complimentary to sensory integration and some argue it should be the foundation of that approach.

Children with autism interpret sensory input differently then other children. This is why hyper or hyposensitivity to certain stimuli (sounds, flashing lights, smells and textures) is so common. When the body does not process input correctly the ramifications are similar to the symptoms of autism; stereotypical behaviors such as hand-flapping, spinning or head-banging are good examples.

In general, chiropractic treatment can focus on alignment of the spine, which houses and protects the nerves within. Additionally, chiropractors focus on balancing the body and achieving homeostasis in efforts to reverse the disease process; in this case autism.

Chiropractic treatment is geared to regulate the nervous system, so the input received is processed appropriately. This can help with many symptoms of autism including sensitivities in the skin.

Some parents work on proper posture as well, although in many cases this is not the reason for seeking chiropractic care. However, proper posture is necessary and beneficial for physical development; muscle tone and balance are a few areas affected by posture.

Chiropractic care being used to treat autism is not considered mainstream but it does not carry a cloud of controversy like other alternative treatments. Most medical providers feel chiropractic treatment has been used and researched enough to demonstrate its safety and effectiveness.

As a stand alone treatment, chiropractic care may not yield all the results parents hope for, so it should be one part of a comprehensive treatment protocol designed to target your child’s specific needs and symptoms.
